Jane Reporting for 11th October
It was a very, very short drive today from Flagstaff to Phoenix, so we waited until things warmed up at Flagstaff before setting out for Phoenix.
We stopped at almost every rest stop we could find - plus at a casino where I got to lose some money (donation to the local Indians ;o) and buy some Christmas decorations. We also had a great lunch with Geoff and Gary both having old-fashioned milkshakes and enjoying them greatly.
From one of the rest stops:
There was a 'zebra' in the car park |
There were pretty railings |
And there was a big sundial |
The sundial was a memorial to the employees of the Arizona Department of Transport who died in the course of their duties.
As we drove along Lyn and I decided we absolutely needed photographs of the 'classic' shaped cactuses that lined the road on either side. This turned out to be more of a hopeless task than catching yellow school buses as they pass by - something that has entertained (but eluded) us for weeks now. After 100+ shots each here are my best two:
Cactuses |
More cactuses than you can poke a stick at |
As we entered Phoenix there were many decorative touches on the edges of the highway, among them a coiled snake make out of different coloured pebbles:
Decorative landscaping |
The photo is taken over the barrier between the lanes, hence the white strip at the bottom.
And so here we are in Phoenix again. Same motel, for those of you who remember the dramas of last year. This time for four nights.
State Quarters
Oklahoma; a nice bird. (Better than the cow's skull.)
