[Thursday, 13th September] We headed out in the evening to visit a few of the recommended casinos before bed. We started at the Bellagio for the fountains, the Paris for the Eiffel Tower, then visited or brushed by (in no particular order) Caesar's Palace, Margaritaville, the Venitian, and maybe some others that have already slipped my mind.
The Paris |
I was most impressed with the Eiffel Tower outside the Paris and the 'daylight' inside the Venetian. Given that it was after 10pm when we got there it was very disconcerting to a tired old brain to find surprisingly realistic daylight indoors, not to mention a canal complete with singing gondoliers.

[Friday, 14th September] After being up late last night we had a quiet morning here at the motel (I did that most exciting of travel chores ... the washing) and then headed over to Excalibur. Our plan was to walk around the four casinos clustered together there (Excalibur, Luxor, New York New York, and MGM Grand), grab lunch and actually use some of the slot machines we were always walking past.
The Luxor |
It was pretty hot outside so once again Gary was outside taking photos while Dad and I sheltered inside - and in this case we decided it would be a good use of our time to get the gambling out of the way while he got the good shots.
New York, New York |
Good news! I don't seem to be headed for a life of gambling addiction. When I found I had bonuses totalling more than my initial investment (US$20) I cashed out, so I can report a profit at the slot machines of 70 cents. ;o)
Slot machines |
There were some great shops in New York New York so we spent a bit of time there, mucking around, and Gary took a photo of the Statue of Liberty that is make out of jelly beans. Fairly sure I'd be sick of them if I had to eat my way through all of those. (The photos enlarge if you click on them.)

At the MGM Grand was the Rain Forest Cafe and shop which also slowed our progress down somewhat. It wasn't until we got home and checked out Gary's photos that we discovered that he'd been doing a bit shelf shuffling with the mugs. There we all are!

And here's a photo of the street looking toward New York New York. Not sure where Gary was when he took this but possibly on one of the walkways that connect the four casinos.
Looking along the street in Las Vegas |
All-in-all Las Vegas wasn't my up of tea - too hot, too busy, too much stuff going on that I wasn't much interested in. Some of the frontages and themes of the casinos were entertaining but the gambling areas were disappointingly alike. Smoking was also rife in the casinos which was off-putting as I felt I could never get away from it.

[Friday, 14th September] When we visited the Apple shop with Pete and Marilynne I was introduced to a game called SpellTower. I convinced Dad to buy it for his iPad and here we are checking it out. Much more fun than an evening out in Las Vegas!
