Before turning in last night I took a few photos from my hotel including this one of the Excalibur Casino just down the road.
Up in the morning, met for breakfast, back to our rooms to finish packing and on the road by about 9.30 am. By lunch time after travelling through scenic deserts then high up into green areas we found ourselves in Caliente. Had lunch then headed west onto the I5 highway at Cedar City.
View from the car of the desert areas.
After climbing to about 6000ft the area became green with the occasional damp areas, small lake, then trees, grass areas and cattle.
Rainbow Gorge before Caliente where I expected to see Indians lined up along the tops.
From here we drove north through Utah turning of on highway 70 towards Denver. One mile after the turn we made mile detour to investigate Fort Cove.
Fort Cove was built by Ira Hinckley in 1867 for the LDS (Mormons) as a save refuge for travellers along the "Mormon Corridor". The fort was surrounded by a farm and many out buildings. The barn, black smithy, ice house, and yards have be restored and rebuilt. The surrounding farm is leased but any grass for hay must be cut in the old way. While we were there the farmer was cutting hay using a small-horse drawn ride on mower. At the time the fort was built there were battles between the settlers and Indians, but as Hinckley treated the Indians fairly the fort was never attacked. The fort is again owned by the LDS and is fully restored and free to visit. We had a thirty minute personally guided tour completely free -- they wouldn't even accept donation. If you are ever in the area it is worth a visit.
From the fort we drove a further 60 miles to Salina. Found our Hotel, had a Mexican meal, and went to bed.
