F-l-a-t: we drive out of Colorado and into Nebraska

by Jane

[Tuesday, 18th September] Denver, Colorado to Kearney, Nebraska - what to say?  Low rolling hills to start with and then even they subsided into a remarkably flat landscape.  Not exactly as dramatic as Utah and the drive over/through the Rockies.

The day didn't start off to well with the GPS coming unplugged and refusing to work properly on battery only.  Since this was at the very time we were trying to get out of Denver.  Never mind, we knew we had to go east. ;o)

Lunch at Sterling

We had lunch at the Village Inn in Sterling. (Last minute decision to drive in to their car park which surprised the people coming out since we were trying to use 'their' side of the entranceway.  A miss is as good as a mile!) Cobb salads for the blokes and a turkey, bacon, and avocado (toasted) sandwich for me. Yum!

The highlights of the day were probably the rest stops off the side of the freeway - informative about the area, clean loos, and at one a fenced dog exercise area!

Rest stop (at Brady?)
The road we were on runs close to the the North Platte River and so part of the Overland Trail - one of the wagon routes for travelling west before the trains got going.  (The Wikipedia page link is here.)

Just a word about our meal last night [Monday, 17th September] - fantastic Chinese meal at the Taste of Asia restaurant. Plenty of veges so we need not worry abut scurvy for a while. :o)

States to Date

One of Gary's aims in the trip was to drive through as many states as possible.  Luckily we ironed out a few of the zigs and zags he had built into the route to achieve this so that we could actually get around in the two months.

Here are the states he has been able to tick off to date:

-- California
-- Arizona
-- Nevada
-- Utah
-- Colorado
-- Nebraska

He's doing okay for only a week on the road.
