Kearney to Sioux City

Today [Wednesday September, 19] we travelled across Nebraska and on into Iowa. From Kearney we went as far as the SAC Nebraska Air Museum had lunch, then travelled through Omaha turned north and headed for Sioux City.

However, we took a wrong turning looking for petrol. Instead of turn off into a town we turned onto another motorway at right angles. After this detour we did get petrol and arrived in Sioux City.

Before Omaha we stopped at at SAC Air Museum for a two hour stop. We enjoyed a conducted (free) tour then had lunch. Arriving at the museum we saw lots of flags, a ballistic missile, and the glass front museum building.

On entering you are confronted by a Blackbird super sonic spy plane swooping down at you.

Inside there were two main areas, the first housing many planes including a B52 and its predecessor. Also here is the Mitchell bomber, a Flying Fortress, and many jet fighters past and present.

Although the majority of the planes were American there was a Canberra and a Vulcan bomber and some planes we did not know.

After looking around Gary and I met up with Jane in the museum 'Plane Food' Cafe for lunch. After lunch we drove through Omaha, across the Sioux River into Iowa.

Then as petrol was getting low we incorrectly turned off onto another motorway. At the first chance, about 8 miles, we turned of and headed for a town, the road sign said was Beebee... something. We were now in the Iowa countryside or the 'cornhuskers' territory.

After some looking at maps and asking at the only establishment handy we headed of across country for about nine miles to a town called Missouri Valley. When we arrived there, we were held up at a railway crossing by a long, a very long, train.

Finally the train passed and we got our petrol, but what a town. The main street takes all the traffic--truck after truck--and parallel to this is the railway with every train passing through continually blow their horns. The noise was deafening and continuous. Gary filled the car and we headed for the Court House in Sioux City.

  1. Loving the photos. Sam let me pick him up and start to groom him this morning - I put him up on his blanky on the cabinet in your room so he would feel at home and although he would not let me get both sides and his tummy at least he purred at me after a while but then he took off and has not been seen since. He is probably asleep in his comfy nest by the front door and in a few moments I shall call him for his tea and see what transpires

  2. Great news about Sam. That's a huge step forward for him. Thanks for persevering with him and keeping us up-to-date. He does love his outside 'nests'! :o)
