We arrive at the beach in Maine

by Jane

Just a quick note that I'll expand into a proper report later.

[Tuesday, 2nd October] We have now completed the 'northern leg' of the trip and have driven right across the US from Laguna Niguel, California, on the west coast to Old Orchard Beach, Maine, on the east.

This is the view from the door of my room here - and we're here for two nights:

Earlier in the day we spent the morning with Robert Stephenson and his Antarctic Circle library in Jaffrey, New Hampshire.

This was Dad's special stop and he spent the morning photographing books from Robert's extensive library that he might want to buy copies of his own and also checking out other books of interest.

The whole place was filled with memorabilia from the various expeditions to Antarctica.

Dad also got to 'sign in' on the door surround, where he left his name and that he was from New Zealand as well as the years he was in the Antarctic.

Robert then took us on to see the Jaffrey Meeting House which was built in 1775.

After leaving Jaffrey we headed along another road through trees in their fall foliage and eventually came to Peterborough where we visited the Toadstool book shop (Dad bought a book, I didn't) and had lunch at the diner opposite.

I can't report on anything after that apart from a couple of toll booths as I slept for the rest of the drive. ;o)
